About The Position

Camp Pennyroyal, a 180-acre Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana overnight camp near Owensboro, KY, serves Girl Scouts in grades 4–12 with traditional activities like boating, archery, and ropes courses. Programs are led by paid staff and volunteers. Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana seeks an enthusiastic Assistant Unit Leader to help provide the best possible camp experience. Assistant Unit Leaders plan and lead programs for a unit of 4–20 Girl Scouts of similar ages and work on a Unit Team consisting of one or two Assistant Unit Leaders and a Unit Leader. They provide 24-hour care and supervision, champion fun, and support campers' health, growth, and skill development. Assistant Unit Leaders with life guarding credentials may assist with swimming, boating lessons, and life guarding as needed. APPLY TODAY!

Requirements

  • Current certifications in American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED, and Waterfront Life-guarding(strongly preferred but not required)
  • 1 year each of childcare/youth program, supervisory, and administrative experience
  • Age 18+
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Swimming proficiency (strongly preferred)
  • Must pass background checks, complete required health history forms, support Girl Scout mission, and promote diversity and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Support Unit Leaders and peers with daily operations, schedules, routines, camper behavior management, and task delegation
  • Recognize and respond to group problem-solving needs
  • Maintain communication with the Unit Leader regarding camper status and needs
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Interact daily with campers and provide a safe, consistent environment
  • Promote respect for diversity; help campers appreciate similarities and differences
  • Provide clear instruction to participants of all ages and skill levels
  • Provide constant supervision in small and large groups within Girl Scout ratios
  • Assist with waterfront activities as assigned
  • Work with Unit staff and campers to develop girl-driven, fun, and safe programming
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Empower campers to share program ideas and help implement them
  • Monitor camper behavior, enforce safety rules, and utilize appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Complete daily checks and assist with program implementation (e.g., arts and crafts, archery)
  • Ensure safe and scheduled use of facilities, supplies, and activities
  • Lead/assist with meaningful, age-appropriate activities; model positive participation
  • Follow weekly schedules in collaboration with Admin Team, Program Instructors, and Unit Leaders
  • Serve as a positive role model in conduct, appearance, and communication
  • Support daily program implementation and operational procedures
  • Supervise children per GSK policy
  • Provide first aid and respond to emergencies per ACA, American Red Cross, and GSK guidelines
  • Maintain communication with the Health Supervisor and Unit Leader regarding camper health needs
  • Assist with emergency procedures (fire drills, evacuations, etc.) and crisis management
  • Clean and sanitize unit and camp areas daily and weekly
  • Maintain a stocked first-aid kit, minimize risk, and report incidents promptly
  • Report suspected abuse to appropriate authorities and GSK
  • Manage physical and financial resources responsibly
  • Provide exemplary customer service
  • Perform other duties as assigned
