About The Position

The 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is seeking an in-house, dedicated and motivated Assistant District Attorney to join our team and manage the Otero County Magistrate Court. This position is ideal for an attorney who thrives in a fast-paced courtroom environment and is eager to gain substantial prosecutorial and trial experience. Work Performed: Incumbant will handle all aspects of criminal prosecution within the Magistrate Court, including case review, charging decisions, plea negotiations, motion practice, and regular court appearances. This position provides the opportunity to participate in jury trials frequently, allowing for the development of strong trial and courtroom advocacy skills. Working Conditions: Work is performed in office and courtroom environments. Physical effort and travel may be required. Incumbent may be required to work under stressful situations and/or conditions. Incumbent may be required to go to crime scenes. Pursuant to the New Mexico District Attorney’s Compensation Plan, the position of attorney is “At Will” and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: This position requires basic knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure; public relations; organization; basic computer skills; ability to draft legal documents; ability to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies; ability to communicate effectively; ability to research and analyze information and situations. This position works independently and makes decisions within guidelines which include decisions to dismiss, proceed to trial or negotiate plea agreements. Seeks guidance from assigned supervisor and/or higher-level attorneys.

Requirements

  • J. D. degree and current license to practice law in New Mexico.
  • Basic knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure
