About The Position

The Assistant Transportation Manager supports the Transportation Manager in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the transportation department. This role includes assisting with transportation logistics, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, optimizing routes, managing staff, and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the transportation operations.

Requirements

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in various transportation equipment.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, and delegating tasks to teams.
  • Knowledge of transportation laws, DOT regulations, and safety requirements.
  • Skilled in monitoring and improving safe driving practices.
  • Proficient in route planning, routing software, and optimizing transportation operations.
  • Strong organizational, record-keeping, and data management skills, including CMMS software and MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance, schedules, and inventory tracking.
  • Understanding of DOT drug screening requirements and health hazard management.
  • Excellent communication and written skills; able to collaborate across all organizational levels.
  • Capable of independent decision-making, sound judgment, and time management under pressure.
  • Adaptable to multicultural environments; bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Commercial Driver’s License Class A
  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Three (3) years of experience in fleet transportation or logistics operations, including a minimum of two years in a supervisory role or leadership role.
  • Must be able to work in hot, cold, wet, humid, dusty, and foggy working conditions depending on weather.
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged periods of sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Lifting occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and optimizing transportation routes to maximize efficiency and control costs.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure timely vehicle servicing and preventive maintenance, minimizing downtime and service disruptions.
  • Support compliance with all safety standards and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Oversee inventory control related to transportation operations, including keeping accurate records of supplies and materials.
  • Handle transportation-related inquiries, issues, and concerns from internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Assist in the development and management of the transportation department’s budget, tracking expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Contribute to identifying potential risks associated with transportation activities and developing strategies to mitigate them.
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring key performance indicators to evaluate transportation performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to initiatives that improve transportation processes, increase efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Support the development and implementation of contingency plans to address transportation disruptions and emergencies.
  • Assist in the development of fuel efficiency strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of vehicle service and inspections.
  • Support the administration and monitoring of GPS and fleet tracking systems to track vehicles and driver performance.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment in compliance with company and OSHA standards, ensuring all work is performed in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Performs other related projects and assignments as business dictates.
