About The Position

The position involves overseeing roadway work throughout the City to ensure compliance with approved traffic management plans. The role includes reviewing the scheduling of construction, coordinating with engineers, and managing various traffic-related permits. The individual will also initiate traffic studies, assist in maintaining traffic control systems, and support site plan reviews for new developments. Additional responsibilities include grant management and operating departmental vehicles safely.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering or related field
  • Five or more (5+) years of professional engineering experience with an emphasis on transportation engineering or related field, including but not limited to traffic and parking analysis, site plan review, review and preparation of temporary traffic control plans (TTCP)
  • EIT Registration required, Professional Engineer (PE) Registration in MA or ability to receive within six (6) months preferred
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification for Work Zone Safety and Traffic Signal I preferred
  • Knowledge of regulations of state and federal transportation agencies, familiar with MassDOT policy and procedures
  • Proficient knowledge of computer software such as Synchro, AutoCAD, and/or BlueBeam
  • Must have experience and working knowledge of MUTCD regulations
  • Must have working knowledge of sections of Massachusetts General Laws pertaining to traffic and parking
  • Must have demonstrated ability to manage and work cooperatively with other staff in a professional manner
  • Must have demonstrated capability with MS Office software applications
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) Registration in MA or ability to receive within six (6) months
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification for Work Zone Safety and Traffic Signal I

Responsibilities

  • Oversees roadway work throughout the City to ensure work zone compliance with approved traffic management plans
  • Reviews scheduling of construction throughout the City and provides reporting on expected conflicts between work zones/expected detours
  • Coordinates with Traffic Engineer and City Engineer to reconcile conflicts of scheduled work and provides weekly reporting
  • Reviews and approves Temporary Traffic Control Plans for roadwork permits in coordination with Traffic Engineer and develops TTCPs for departmental work as required
  • Reviews and approves various City permits such as dumpster permits, moving truck permits, etc.
  • Coordinates activities within TPAL and with other City departments, external agencies, and the general public
  • Initiates traffic studies, analyzes data, and prepares recommendations and design elements for traffic or parking improvements
  • Assists in the maintenance of traffic control systems, including diagnosing field issues and providing updated programming to traffic signal controllers
  • Assists in site plan review for new development in coordination with the Traffic Engineer and City Planning Department to identify traffic constraints, challenges the project may pose, and appropriate mitigation measures
  • Assists with federal and state grant identification, application, and management
  • Operates departmental vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisors
