About The Position

The Assistant Terminal Operations Manager - Big Island position is responsible for stevedoring and port operations for Hilo and Kawaihae on the island of Hawaii. Directs all stevedoring, yard, auto and barge planning operations to meet or exceed customer expectations while adhering to the overall Company objectives, budgets, and operating standards. Through effective planning and direction, control labor costs while maintaining good labor relations, safety, and morale of personnel.

Requirements

  • College degree preferred. In-kind experience acceptable.
  • Previous supervisory experience in shipping, transportation, logistics or operations.
  • Strong first line supervisory experience and good leadership skills required.
  • Proven ability to prioritize work responsibilities in a multi-task work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and lead bargaining unit personnel with professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Matson Terminals' operations, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and directs Island stevedoring activities to ensure the most productive operations possible.
  • Manages execution of plans for operations, which cover barge/vessel discharge and loadback to ensure freight is available when the customer wants it.
  • Communicates effectively with other MTI and MNC departments.
  • Sets priorities with respect to operations and manpower to reach goals in an efficient, timely, and cost effective manner in compliance with Company policies and objectives.
  • Understands and administers the longshore collective bargaining agreement.
  • Acts independently to provide consistent, fair, and impartial disciplinary action and makes promotional recommendations in accordance with the agreement.
  • Adjusts grievances and resolves disputes.
  • Assists with collective bargaining negotiations.
  • Directs manpower callouts, scheduling, and shifting to optimize use of labor and minimize cost in accordance with the Longshore and Wharf Clerk collective bargaining agreements and Company policy.
  • Enforces company policy regarding start and stop time, breaks and lunches.
  • Continuously monitors the work area to ensure compliance with Company, State and Federal safety regulations.
  • Responsible for the enforcement of the Stevedore Industry Committee Substance Abuse Policy Agreement.
  • Investigates incidents involving damage or injury.
  • Responds proactively to accident and damage reports to recommend operational changes or enforce procedures as needed.
  • Pays particular attention to equipment damage and takes steps to reduce damage and correct unsafe practices.
  • Hires, trains, and motivates a competent workforce.
  • Monitors staff progress and provides feedback on performance.
  • Completes annual performance appraisals for staff.
  • In the absence of the Terminal Manager, or upon request, assumes his/her duties.
  • Performs other special assignments as requested by the Terminal Manager and/or Vice President - MTI Operations.
