About The Position

As a member of the Technical Direction team, the Assistant Technical Director contributes to the engineering and drafting of scenery, assists with purchasing and tracking materials and expenditures, assists with load-in and strike, and assists with scenic notes during technical rehearsal periods. Additionally, assists in directing Scene Shop and Stage Operations personnel, and participates in maintaining scenery, stock, storage, and production related spaces in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner.

Requirements

  • B.A. or equivalent in Technical Production and three years’ equivalent experience in a professional scene shop.
  • Proficient knowledge in AutoCAD and theatrical drafting standards.
  • Experience and knowledge of standard scenery building processes, materials, techniques, and engineering.
  • Knowledgeable in the safe use of typical wood/metal machine and hand power tools.
  • Must possess a keen awareness of shop safety and procedures.
  • Experience with theatrical/entertainment rigging techniques.
  • Ability to lead a crew of up to 6 people with varying skill levels and experience.
  • Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft office products.
  • Able to lift 50+ lbs.
  • Comfortable working at heights of 60+ ft.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills

  • Self-motivated, punctual, efficient, and able to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, with advance notice.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with stage machinery and automation, including Creative Conners equipment and Spikemark software.
  • Proficient at programming and running a RAYNOC automated rigging system.
  • Ability to drive a 26’ box truck.
  • 3D drafting with AutoCAD.
  • Basic understanding of budgeting, accounting, and bookkeeping practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in drafting and generating build and installation drawings for projects.
  • Assist TD team in leading load-ins and strikes.
  • Assist TD team by attending technical rehearsals to take notes.
  • Assist in leading notes throughout the technical rehearsal process.
  • Communicate with supervisors regarding the progress of assigned projects.
  • Adhere to and promote safe working practices.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient workspace.
  • Occasional maintenance of facility and facility equipment pertinent to scenery operations.
  • Assist in maintenance and upkeep of shop tools and spaces.
  • Conduct research for materials and products.
  • Assist with purchasing and tracking materials for the Scene Shop.
  • Track Scene Shop expenses and maintain receipts.
  • Process purchase orders and material sign out sheets.
  • Purchase materials and supplies, including retrieving materials from vendors.
  • Update inventory management software
  • Serve as crew lead or specialist on assigned rigging or automation projects
  • Perform scenic construction duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental needs with other production departments
  • Prepare and maintain schedules including build, install, maintenance, and strike.
  • Lead maintenance and serve as chief inspector on shows that include automation or specialized rigging.
  • May be assigned machines and/or areas of the shop to spearhead maintenance and training.
  • Assist with budgeting, cost analysis, and scope feasibility for scenic designs
  • Occasional interfacing with creative team to clarify scenery details or usage
  • Locate and schedule over-hire labor as needed for build, install, and strike processes
  • Other duties, as assigned.
