About The Position

The School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) at ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor in the area of German with appointment beginning August 16, 2025. The successful candidate will provide leadership in coordinating the German language program, including administrative and curriculum development responsibilities, and support the program's asynchronous course offerings. The candidate will also be expected to teach German language/culture courses at the 100- through 400-level, both in-person and online (synchronous and asynchronous), hold office hours, and work closely with the German section head to develop course materials, assessments, syllabi, and assignments. This is an in-person, full-time, non-tenure eligible appointment made on an academic year basis (Aug. 16 - May 15). A typical full-time course load is four classes per academic semester. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, the needs of the university, and sufficient enrollment in assigned courses.

Requirements

  • M.A in German, Applied Linguistics, or a related field, by time of appointment.
  • Four years' experience in higher education teaching German language/culture courses.
  • Two years of language program coordination or administrative experience.
  • Evidence of effective teaching in different modalities (e.g. online, in-person, hybrid).
  • Evidence of advanced proficiency in both German and English.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in German, Applied Linguistics, or a related field, by time of appointment.
  • Background in Second Language Acquisition (SLA).
  • Ability to teach upper-division coursework within the current curriculum.
  • Experience in intercultural competence, career readiness, and internships.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, particularly in online courses.
  • Evidence of leadership in coordinating language programs.
  • Experience with proficiency assessments and program-level evaluations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in appropriate technologies for language instruction.
  • Evidence of promoting culturally informed pedagogies.
  • Ability to engage students in language learning through innovative course design and extracurricular activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
