About The Position

The University of Montana is seeking an Assistant Teaching Professor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the Department of Forest Management. This non-tenure track position focuses on undergraduate education, emphasizing high-impact learning practices and professional experience in GIS. The successful candidate will teach various GIS courses, support the GIS Certificate program, and provide technical assistance to students, while remaining current on GIS applications and technology.

Requirements

• An M.S. or Ph.D. in geography, forestry, ecology, or a related field.
• Proficiency with a range of GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro, and techniques such as cartography and geospatial databases.
• A commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and effective teaching.
• A record of effective collaboration and commitment to ethics, openness, collegiality, and diversity.

Nice To Haves

• Three or more years of professional experience in GIS.
• Professional certification (e.g., GISP, USGIF, and/or ASPRS).
• Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
• Experience with multiple teaching modalities, including hybrid and online instruction.
• Experience with high-impact learning practices, including service-learning and community-engaged teaching.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate GIS courses, including introductory and intermediate levels, as well as upper-division or graduate courses in the candidate's area of specialization.
• Advise students on internships and directed research involving GIS.
• Provide technical support in GIS to undergraduate and graduate students.
• Collaborate with the GIS Certificate Committee on curriculum development, student recruitment, and program assessment.
• Engage in service responsibilities to support the department and its students.
