As a key member of the youth development team, the assistant teacher is responsible for creating a safe, fun and positive atmosphere that promotes member engagement in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values
  • People centered, service oriented
  • Be able to work in a variety of weather – sun, rain, snow.
  • Ability to lead age-appropriate group activities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Background knowledge in and passion for Nature.
  • Ability to help develop an emergent curriculum and connect learning objectives through play in nature.
  • Previous camp/preschool or group work experience
  • Provide excellent group supervision for up to 12 participants
  • Ability to follow and implement all safety procedures and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
  • Consistent positive attitude, modeling the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Enjoy working with ages 3-5 years old and be responsible for knowing developmental differences
  • Stands and greets parents and youth by name
  • Leads group songs, games and crafts, and engages youth in learning activities
  • Maintains positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
  • Knows, understand, and consistently applies all safety rules.
  • Communicates with parents and caregivers in a professional manner that represents the Y regarding their child’s activities/day
  • Possess a willingness to work with youth and have FUN
  • Able to be a role model for youth in our programs
  • A leader that has initiative, enthusiasm, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Attends all staff meetings and trainings as assigned
  • Completes required abuse risk management training. Adheres to policies and procedures in managing high-risk activities and appropriate boundaries of supervision. Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations to supervisor. Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements to authorities.
