About The Position

This position serves a critical role in the day-to-day and strategic operations for an assigned zone consisting of multiple locations across the region. This position will facilitate the development and daily execution of regional safety action plans. Provide leadership and direction coordinate with various departmental leadership to ensure the safe movement of trains, efficient asset utilization, cost control, customer service and development of employees. The Midwest Region includes: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Ontario (Canada), Pennsylvania, and Kentucky

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 7 or more years of experience in Transportation, Logistics, Rail Operations, Military, or Skilled Trades (building/construction, electrical, mechanical)
  • 4 or more years of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of Scheduled Railroading
  • Railroad industry and terminal operations knowledge
  • Ability to create a culture of safety and accountability
  • Ability to develop and drive change initiatives
  • Strong aptitude for railroad logistics
  • Proactively identify opportunities to increase asset utilization and decrease cost
  • Superior oral and written communication, negotiation, influencing, personal leadership, and strategic leadership skills
  • Analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective budget management by using guiding principles, understands customer focus and importance of meeting trip plans
  • Strong knowledge of railroad operations, safety and regulatory standards
  • Flexibility to adjust to the changing demands of the role on a daily basis
  • Ability to motivate, hold team accountable and adapt to various personalities as a leader
  • Superior organizational and time management skills
  • Strong business acumen
  • Available to report to work with two-hour advance notice
  • May be required to complete a background check
  • Wear protective equipment (such as welding shields, hard hat, hearing protection)

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate the implementation and execution of Scheduled Railroading strategies and principles while maintaining constant focus on operating trains safely.
  • Anticipate and minimize service failures and facilitate rapid response to service inquiries and failures
  • Consistently evaluate zone/regions logistical operations to develop and implement strategies to maximize efficiency
  • Effectively communicate and influence strategies that propel the company forward in the successful use of scheduled railroading.
  • Manage multi-million dollar budget and continuously identify opportunity to optimize asset utilization and reduce costs.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize asset utilization and reduce costs.
  • Consistently terminal logistical operations to develop and implement strategies to maximize efficiency.
  • Partner with Mechanical and Engineering leadership to ensure regional performance goals are achieved.
  • Cross-departmentally coordinate activities related to injuries, derailments and other service disruptions. Investigate and determine cause to ensure future injury/train accident prevention.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive business relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attend customer meetings as required, developing relationships, and addressing all service-related issues.
  • Develop and execute cross-departmental plans for managing zone/regional resources.
  • Review performance of all craft and management employees and identify areas for improvement. Reward and discipline to reinforce desired behavior.
  • Recruit, develop, and motivate future leaders through coaching, training, skill enhancement, and performance feedback.
