About The Position

The Vermont Department of Corrections is looking for an Assistant Superintendent at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility (MVRCF), in Rutland VT.  The Assistant Superintendent is a managerial position under the general supervision of a Correctional Facility Superintendent, and performs administrative, managerial, and supervisory work required in planning, delivery, and evaluating correctional services. Supervision is exercised over supervisory, casework, technical, security, and clerical employees. Extensive liaison occurs with correctional, law enforcement, political, and service provider personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree AND four (4) years of administrative or supervisory experience in a correctional setting.
  • HS diploma or equivalent AND eight (8) years at a professional level in the broad area of human services, including five (5) years in either a correctional setting or a role requiring frequent interaction with correctional facility administration and incarcerated individuals, coordinating with a correctional facility program, or direct casework with correctional incarcerated individuals.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, pursuant to 20 V.S.A. 2056c or other applicable statutory authority, requires criminal record checks for all AHS positions, including motor vehicle driving record checks and national record checks where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, evaluate, and discipline staff.
  • Supervises staff and ensures that training standards are met.
  • Maintains systems for incarcerated individual case records, confidential files, and management information in order to monitor workload, supervise program activities, and conduct program evaluation.
  • May directly manage or develop and coordinate with other agencies, various incarcerated individual programs including educational, vocational, and therapeutic designed to promote incarcerated individual growth and public safety.
  • May act as the facility PREA compliance manager, ADA Site coordinator and/or site Grievance Coordinator.
  • Participates in public speaking before civic and community groups to explain correctional services and to secure community involvement.
  • Drafts and presents changes in policies, standards, and operating procedures.
  • May negotiate and monitor contracts with community service providers.
  • Assumes command in the absence of the superintendent.
  • Assists in the management of a facility housing adult incarcerated individuals ranging from pre-trial detentionees to life sentences.
  • Manages assigned in-house programs and may coordinate physical plant issues with the State Buildings Department.
  • Performs related duties as required.
