About The Position

The Assistant Superintendent assists in directing, coordinating, and overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and improvement of the City's street and bridge infrastructure. This position supports the Superintendent in planning, organizing, and supervising departmental personnel, equipment, and projects to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective service delivery to the public. The Assistant Superintendent provides leadership in field operations, ensures compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, and promotes a safe work environment while maintaining high standards of productivity and customer service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in street, bridge, or public works operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience reading and interpreting utility maps, blueprints, and construction drawings.
  • Additional technical training in construction management, public works operations, or related field.
  • Relevant certifications related to public works, infrastructure maintenance, or safety.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and participates in the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, bridges, drainage systems, rights-of-way, signage, and related infrastructure.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling preventative maintenance programs.
  • Inspects ongoing and completed projects to ensure conformance with specifications, safety standards, and quality expectations.
  • Assists in developing methods and sequencing of operations to support system improvements, expansions, or modifications.
  • Evaluates field conditions and determines appropriate materials, tools, and equipment for assigned projects.
  • Utilizes computer systems to maintain accurate records of service requests, work orders, personnel time, equipment usage, materials inventory, blanket orders, and purchase orders.
  • Assists in preparation, monitoring, and administration of the departmental budget.
  • Reviews and processes bi-weekly overtime forms and payroll-related documentation.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, documentation, and records for internal files, regulatory agencies, contractors, and the public.
  • Assists in evaluating and recommending purchases of new equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Coordinates work activities with contractors, utility companies, vendors, and other governmental agencies.
  • Confers with administrative and technical personnel to ensure efficient departmental operations.
  • Investigates citizen complaints and service requests, determines corrective action, and ensures timely resolution.
  • Represents the department in meetings, training sessions, and public interactions as assigned.
  • Attends seminars and training sessions to remain current with local, state, and federal rules and regulations affecting public works operations.
  • Ensures crews operate in compliance with applicable safety regulations and City policies.
  • Promotes safe work practices and ensures proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all required licenses, certifications, clearances, and job-related qualifications.
  • Works assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

From 6 to less than 11 years of service - three weeks of vacation per year. From 11 to less than 21 years of service – four weeks of vacation per year. From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year. From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
