About The Position

The mission of the City of Boston Property Management Department (PMD) is to manage, maintain, repair, and provide security for the City's municipal buildings, including City Hall and Faneuil Hall; to preserve the useful life of City facilities and reduce operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures. Under general supervision of the Building Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Custodians is responsible for supervising senior and junior custodians in maintaining City buildings and grounds in a clean and safe manner.

Requirements

  • At least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in custodial and/or maintenance work, preferably in large public buildings, of which one (1) year must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the methods and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds.
  • General knowledge of building maintenance and repair requirements.
  • Ability to instruct and supervise employees in such activities and enforce City and Department policies.
  • Ability to implement new or revised policies, procedures, and programs related to the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds and the issuance of supplies.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required.
  • Must have and maintain a current MA Driver's License.
  • CORI check required.

Nice To Haves

  • Hoisting license preferred. If no Hoisting License upon hire, you must obtain a valid MA Hoisting License within six (6) months of the date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises senior and junior building custodians and assigns work to various crews for a variety of ordinary maintenance and repair tasks of a semi-skilled nature to buildings and grounds.
  • Reviews daily attendance and tardiness of staff and approves vacation requests and other leaves of absence.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of power equipment, including snow blowers, lawnmowers, floor buffers, and snow plows that do not require a commercial driver’s license.
  • Tours City Hall and other city-owned buildings and grounds daily to ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and safe use of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment; processes requisitions for supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on all cleaning, maintenance, and safety for the Superintendent; makes recommendations on changes in policies and procedures as required.
  • Performs related work as required.
