About The Position

The job of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment is to support teaching and learning for the following purpose/s; providing information and serving as a resource to others; achieving defined objective by planning, evaluating, developing and implementing and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines; and serving as a member of the leadership team. This job reports to Superintendent.

Requirements

  • At least five years of successful school district experience in a public K-12 educational setting including experience in areas related to job responsibilities.
  • Experience and knowledge of modern managerial processes and collaborative approaches to problem solving.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer software for spreadsheets, word-processing and presentations.
  • Knowledge and ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the Assistant Superintendent(s) for Instruction Support, be responsible for the overall K-12 instruction program including curriculum development, articulation, improvement, evaluation, and the development of effective training programs to accomplish it.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the Director of Assessment.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the Director of Professional Development.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the Director of Gifted.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the Director of Language Arts.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the Director of Fine Arts.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the Director of Special Education.
  • Interpret the programs, philosophy, and policies of the district to staff, students, and the community at large.
  • Maintain liaison with social, professional, civic, volunteer, and other community agencies and groups having an interest in the schools.
  • Prepare state reports and claims as required.
  • Attend Board meetings and prepare such reports as the Superintendent may request.
  • Provide leadership in developing cultural competence in all district staff.
  • Collaborates with internal and external personnel (e.g. other administrators, parents, teachers, building faculties, advisory groups, community members, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
  • Compiles data from a variety of sources for the purpose of evaluating district curriculum and/or services, developing programs and/or services and complying with financial, legal and administrative requirements.
  • Coordinates program components, support needs and materials for the purpose of delivering services, which conform to establish guidelines.
  • Develop new curriculum, new courses of study and a process for the adoption of instructional resources for the purpose of implementing long and short range plans leading to the achievement of district goals.
  • Directs department operations; the maintenance of services, and the implementation of new programs and/or processes for the purpose of providing services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
  • Facilitates articulation of curriculum programs within a school, among the schools, and in the community for the purpose of conveying information, assessing needs, publicizing events and activities, and enhancing the relationship of the department within district and the community at large.
  • Implements assigned programs and/or projects (e.g. curriculum maps, Arizona State Standards, Professional Learning Communities, etc.) for the purpose of conforming to district and state curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
  • Manages curriculum content and courses of students for the purpose of conforming to district and state curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
  • Monitors budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Participates as a member or facilitator in meetings, workshops and seminars (e.g. training for teachers and administrators on program implementation, presenting to Governing Board, assessing needs of curriculum programs, evaluating programs etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations, providing training, and conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, training, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel, and achieving objectives within budget.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. long and short range plans, reports, analyses, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of conveying information and/or recommendation regarding district curriculum.
  • Responds to issues and inquiries from school district administrators, parents, and educators for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
  • Serves as liaison to school principals and parents for the purpose of evaluating situations and/or programs, providing direction, and achieving overall program and district objectives.
  • Serves on Superintendent’s Cabinet.
  • Perform other tasks as may be assigned by the Superintendent for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
