About The Position

The Assistant Store Manger (ASM) is the junior member of the general management team with a specialization in prepared food and fresh departments. The ASM plays a key leadership role in ensuring exceptional product quality, merchandising, food safety, and customer service across all Fresh departments which includes: meat, deli and prepared foods. You will help oversee daily operations, lead and develop associates, ensure compliance with company policies and food safety standards, and drive performance that supports overall store success. Your leadership creates a positive, inclusive environment where customers feel welcomed and associates feel supported.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of mid-sized grocery store operations and merchandising techniques.
  • Must have the flexibility to work a second shift schedule, i.e. 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm and weekends.
  • Specialization in food service, made to order food items
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with experience directing or supervising associates.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn multiple tasks and technical requirements, including store systems.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and daily use of a vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous department manager or equivalent retail leadership experience.
  • Experience working across departments (produce, deli, specialty foods, made to order, retail).
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced kitchen highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and support associates across Fresh departments, ensuring consistent execution of duties and high-quality customer service.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive environment that retains both customers and associates.
  • Hire, train, coach, and develop team members using available tools, certified trainers, and standard practices.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication within the department and across the store.
  • Build strong customer relationships and actively promote a culture of enthusiasm and engagement.
  • Manage operations in accordance with established company standard practices and food safety protocols.
  • Ensure store appearance, particularly in the fresh food department, presentation, product variety, and quality meet or exceed standards.
  • Oversee receiving, storing, processing, and merchandising of products following established guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, shrink, sales, and inventory levels.
  • Use company systems and tools for scheduling, ordering, reporting, and performance management.
  • Ensure full compliance with sanitation, food safety, safety policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in meeting or exceeding financial goals, including sales, shrink control, labor efficiency, and gross margin performance.
