About The Position

A Chief Assistant Statewide Prosecutor employed by the Office of Statewide Prosecution performs administrative, supervisory, and litigation functions within the assigned Office, at the direction of the Statewide Prosecutor.

Responsibilities

  • Performing the intake function for the Office, with reference to the guidelines provided, and in consultation with the Statewide Prosecutor.
  • Assigning cases to Assistant Statewide Prosecutors for investigation and prosecution.
  • Assisting in the coordination of investigations, by communication with the supervisors of case agents; reporting difficulties to the Statewide Prosecutor.
  • Ensure the effective use of the “integrated approach” to organized crime by monitoring the involvement of other divisions of the Department of Legal Affairs, or additional law enforcement or regulatory agencies, and reporting difficulties in implementing civil remedies or other enforcement strategies to the Statewide Prosecutor.
  • Supervising and monitoring the preparation and progress of criminal cases; reviewing charging documents for legal sufficiency; approving plea offers to criminal defendants, or decisions to abandon charges; and offering advice and suggestions during other significant phases of prosecution.
  • Assisting the Statewide Prosecutor in the selection of appropriate cases for submission to the Statewide Grand Jury, supervising the attorneys handling the cases, and consulting with the Statewide Prosecutor on the scheduling of appearances.
  • Assisting the Executive Assistant in the logistical arrangements for the Statewide Grand Jury when it is seated in the geographic area covered by the Bureau.
  • Assisting in the supervision of the daily operations of the Bureau, including the scheduling of lunch hours, flex-time, vacation and leave time, and other such matters as they arise.
  • Assisting in the hiring, evaluation, promotion, discipline, and dismissal of employees.
  • Maintaining the efficient operation of the Office through the requisition of necessary supplies and equipment, the proper maintenance and disposal thereof; assisting the Executive Assistant in the proper inventory of all property purchased by the Office.
  • Monitoring compliance with all Office policies and procedures; maintaining supporting documentation demonstrating compliance.
  • Ensuring the proper use and maintenance of automobiles loaned to the Office.
  • Maintaining a current and useful library of research materials for use by staff attorneys.
  • Handle a case load of active investigations and prosecutions; performing the same functions as an Assistant Statewide Prosecutor as set forth in the position description for Senior Attorneys.
  • Serving as liaison for the Statewide Prosecutor to Law Enforcement; the Legislature; all State, Federal, and local governmental agencies, and the public.
  • Ensuring responsible, ethical, and professional conduct by Office employees of the Office.
  • Ensuring prompt and courteous responses to inquiries from the public and the media, with due regard for the sensitive nature of the work of the Office; ensuring compliance with the Public Records Law.
  • Assisting the Statewide Prosecutor in the formulation of internal Office procedures to maximize efficiency without sacrificing quality or integrity of work product, the formulation of personnel policies which promote professional growth and enhance morale and self-esteem of staff, the formulation of legislative priorities for the improvement of the criminal justice system in the State, and the formulation of a comprehensive plan for the successful investigation and prosecution of organized crime.
  • Assist the Statewide Prosecutor in the lawful execution of the duties of the Office and in the accomplishment of the goals set forth in the Agency Functional Plan.
