About The Position

The SPD Trial Division provides legal representation at the circuit court (trial court) level. The types of cases include but are not limited to criminal, civil commitment, protective placement (personal guardianship), revocation of conditional liberty (probation, parole, or extended supervision), sexually violent offender commitment, termination of parental rights, and others as specified by state law for juveniles and adults.

Requirements

• Graduated from or soon to graduate from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin prior to start date.
• Strong commitment and dedication to indigent defense.
• Fluency in a foreign language is a plus.

• Experience representing criminal cases.
• Experience reviewing discovery.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal representation in various types of cases at the circuit court level.
• Conduct litigation or hearings and negotiate on behalf of clients.
• Prepare and work with legal documents including pleadings, motions, and briefs.
• Manage time effectively to meet hard deadlines for caseload.
• Interact professionally with diverse groups including office staff, clients, opposing counsel, and courts.

Benefits

• Starting salary between $36.72 to $56.37 per hour ($76,377.60 to $117,249.60 annually).
