About The Position

SWCA is seeking an Assistant Staff Geologist for our San Antonio, TX office. As a valuable member of the team, your tasks will predominantly involve being a field geologist and working with project managers to organize, execute, and report on fieldwork. Surveys for Karst features and preparation of geologic assessments and solution feature plans for Karst studies will be key activities. Other tasks will be to conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, groundwater and stormwater sampling, and endangered species surveys.This is regular (with benefits), hourly, non-exempt position and can be worked in a hybrid capacity. Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geophysics, Soil Science or related field required.
  • Suitable candidates should have experience with accurate data collection procedures, and data entry QA/QC.
  • The ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes, is required. The ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Current TBPG Geologist-in-Training certification or ability to obtain it.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two year’s field experience in geologic studies, Karst surveys, hydrological assessments or similar environmental studies.
  • Experience preparing technical reports for submittal to clients and resource agencies.
  • Experience performing surveys for karst geology and for endangered species in karst environments.
  • Experience in central, south and east Texas field geology.
  • Experience completing Phase I ESAs in accordance with ASTM standards.
  • Experience performing geological assessments of the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone.
  • Experience completing solution feature discovery notification reports where TCEQ Form 10256 is used.
  • Candidates licensed and qualified to perform geologic assessments in accordance with the TCEQ’s Edwards Aquifer Rules (30 TAC 213) and the TCEQ’s current applicable “Instructions to Geologists” guidance document.
  • Experience in field assessments for Habitat Conservation Plans.
  • Experience with GIS field data collection.
  • Ability to research and prepare technical documents.

Responsibilities

  • Surveys for karst features and the preparation of geologic assessment and solution feature discovery reports.
  • Excavation and exploration of caves and karst features, including cave mapping;
  • Groundwater hydrology, drainage basin delineation, and other technical analyses related to Karst geology and aquifers.
  • Preparation of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM standards.
  • Soil, stormwater, and groundwater sampling.
  • Collect data and complete field forms, digital photography, and mapping.
  • Coordinate and communicate with project managers, land surveyors, landowners and other SWCA staff as necessary.
  • Assisting with report preparation.
  • Operate SWCA vehicles, assure they will perform safely, and notify appropriate person if vehicle needs maintenance. Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on rugged, back country roads necessary.
