About The Position

The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full time Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) position. The incumbent carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

Requirements

  • Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
  • PhD and postdoctoral degree in Biology, Immunology, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a research laboratory, particularly in immunology or diabetes-related studies, is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
  • Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
  • Uses the internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Assist in Immunological Research: Support studies on T cell immunity related to type 1 diabetes (T1D), including experiments on T cell responses and pancreatic histopathology.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Gather and analyze data pertinent to autoimmune mechanisms in T1D, ensuring accuracy and relevance to ongoing research projects.
  • Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure adherence to safety protocols specific to immunology and virology research.
  • Collaborate on Grant Proposals: Work with senior researchers to draft and submit grant proposals aimed at securing funding for T1D research initiatives.
  • Prepare Research Publications: Contribute to the writing and editing of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, focusing on findings related to T cell immunity and diabetes.
  • Coordinate Clinical Samples: Manage the collection and processing of clinical samples, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and protocols.
  • Stay Updated on Research Developments: Continuously review current literature on immunology and T1D to inform and enhance research methodologies.
