About The Position

The Assistant Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing safety training and compliance within a transportation environment. This role involves developing and implementing safety programs, conducting investigations, and ensuring adherence to safety regulations. The Assistant Safety Manager will work closely with various departments to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement in safety performance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
  • Certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer certification.
  • Class 'B' Commercial Driver License.
  • At least 3 years' progressive transit experience with commercial class 'B' vehicles in a fixed route transit system.
  • Knowledge of DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards, and ADA requirements.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures.
  • Ability to conduct investigations, analyze data, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.

Responsibilities

  • Select, hire, and train qualified candidates for employment.
  • Conduct oral presentations and relay technical information in understandable terms.
  • Communicate job requirements and responsibilities to drivers.
  • Work closely with Human Resources to ensure driver hiring and compliance processes.
  • Provide direction and guidance to location trainers.
  • Develop, teach, and monitor classroom training contents to ensure compliance.
  • Oversee and schedule re-certification and re-training.
  • Design and deliver driver training and safety courses; train new drivers and retrain those involved in accidents.
  • Create and maintain all required driver files.
  • Coordinate monthly safety reporting and performance trends in safety KPIs.
  • Inform location leadership team of safety performance and provide timely alerts as necessary.
  • Drive a continuous improvement culture in safety performance.
  • Chair Safety and Accident Review committees.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries.
  • Direct Drug and Alcohol Program for location to ensure compliance.
  • Lead the site implementation of the Safety Management System Plan.
  • Monitor compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify and assess new hazards introduced in the workplace.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of safety within the organization.
  • Plan, schedule, and deliver monthly safety meetings.
