About The Position

Willdan is seeking a field-oriented Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support HVAC and mechanical construction projects throughout New York City. This position is primarily site-based and focused on field coordination, subcontractor oversight, safety compliance, and daily construction operations. The APM will support multiple Project Managers across active projects and must be comfortable traveling between job sites as needed. This role is ideal for someone looking to build strong field leadership experience with a growth path toward Superintendent or Project Manager roles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field a plus but not required.
  • 0–3 years of construction or HVAC/mechanical field experience.
  • Strong interest in field operations and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
  • OSHA 62 certification required or currently in training (mandatory).
  • Willingness and ability to travel between multiple NYC project sites.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Procore experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain active presence on assigned job sites across NYC boroughs.
  • Travel between multiple project sites to support various Project Managers as needed.
  • Assist project team in coordinating HVAC subcontractors and field crews.
  • Monitor installation of mechanical systems including ductwork, piping, RTUs, AHUs, chillers, boilers, Heat Pump systems, and controls.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with contract documents, drawings, specifications, and NYC codes.
  • Support site logistics including equipment deliveries, material staging, and access coordination.
  • Track daily manpower, progress, and production rates.
  • Document field progress through daily reports and photographic records.
  • Coordinate activities between HVAC, electrical, plumbing, general construction, and other trades.
  • Assist in enforcing project schedule milestones and work sequencing.
  • Monitor subcontractor quality and identify deficiencies.
  • Support field issue resolution and escalation to Project Managers.
  • Assist with punch list development and closeout verification.
  • Must possess OSHA 62 certification or be actively enrolled in OSHA 62 training.
  • Promote and enforce a strong jobsite safety culture.
  • Monitor subcontractor compliance with OSHA, NYC DOB requirements, and site-specific safety plans.
  • Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Identify hazards and escalate safety concerns immediately.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation and reporting.
  • Assist in tracking field progress against project schedules.
  • Support identification and documentation of RFIs and field clarifications.
  • Verify installed quantities for payment application review.
  • Maintain organized field logs, inspection records, and daily reports.
  • Coordinate DOB inspections and required signoffs.
  • Assist with equipment start-up, testing, commissioning, and turnover documentation.
  • Support site visits with owners, consultants, and inspectors.
  • Participate in progress meetings and job walks.
  • Ensure site readiness for inspections and agency reviews.
  • Maintain professional communication across all stakeholders.
