About The Position

The Department of Health and Human Development invites applications for an Assistant professor from outstanding candidates who conduct critical, rigorous, theoretically grounded qualitative research on health and fitness. We seek a collaborative colleague who employs innovative and critical approaches in their teaching, advising/mentoring of students, and scholarship. Further, we seek a scholar whose work connections to our existing Health and Fitness programming and the growing number of critical scholars across the School of Education. The University of Pittsburgh offers undergraduate, MEd, EdD, and PhD degrees. Working collaboratively, the faculty have actively sought to advance equity and justice through teaching and learning, advising and mentoring of students, engaged collaborations, and scholarship. We seek to continue our momentum by having a scholar join the Health and Human Development faculty to: (1) advise undergraduate, master's and doctoral students in health and fitness; (2) teach online, hybrid, and in-person courses; and (3) contribute to curriculum design and development of certificate and micro-credential programs across the Department of Health and Human Development. The Candidate would join a vibrant community in the School of Education, at a time of great excitement, synergy, momentum, and action, particularly in relation to our explicit commitment to equity, justice, and innovation. As a School, we are committed to determining sustainable ways to disrupt long-standing patterns of inequity and injustice in education. To that purpose, we invite applicants who have deep qualitative knowledge and experience engaging in robust analyses of pressing issues related to health and fitness and who investigate ways to interrupt inequitable educational practices through their teaching, research, and community-engaged activities.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in Exercise Physiology or a closely related field by July 1, 2026.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and justice in alignment with the Pitt School of Education Mission-Vision.
  • Potential for or established record of scholarly publication, including peer-reviewed journal publications that match hired rank.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and significant expertise in health and fitness.
  • Potential for or demonstrated record of securing external funding.
  • Potential for or demonstrated record of excellence in university-level teaching in higher education.
  • Potential for or demonstrated excellence in advising and mentoring students.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise teaching in health and fitness.
  • Experience with or potential for innovation and excellence in university-level teaching and using technology for online and blended format classes.

Responsibilities

  • Developing a strong research program that builds scholarly knowledge and informs the regional, national, and global conversations about health and fitness
  • Contributing expertise to health and fitness and teaching courses in Department of Health and Human Development, including teaching courses across undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
  • Developing, redesigning, and implementing new Health and Fitness courses, or other applicable Health and Human Development courses, as well as supporting and refreshing current course offerings
  • Engaging in antiracist work that assesses and poses potential solutions to the social, economic, political, and/or educational challenges that fitness professionals must address
  • Partnering with local, regional, national, and/or international institutions, and professional organizations.
