About The Position

The University of Louisville invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a joint appointment between the Department of Bioengineering in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in the School of Medicine. The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2026. This joint position is designed to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration between engineering and clinical orthopedics, with a strong emphasis on biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, and additive manufacturing (3D printing). The successful candidate will contribute to education, research, and translational innovation at the interface of bioengineering and orthopedic surgery.

Requirements

  • PhD in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity and potential for external funding.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate Bioengineering courses, particularly in biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, orthopedic biomechanics and 3D printing and advanced manufacturing for biomedical applications
  • Develop an externally funded research program aligned with orthopedic and musculoskeletal health.
  • Actively engage in interdisciplinary clinical collaboration with orthopedic surgeons, including: willingness to observe and participate (as appropriate) in the operating room (OR) environment and translating clinical challenges into engineering-driven research and design solutions.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in interdisciplinary research.
  • Supervise and support engineering students who collaborate with clinicians on: design of orthopedic devices and systems and mechanical testing and validation using engineering-side facilities and laboratories.
  • Contribute to departmental, school, and university service.
