About The Position

The Mental Health and Human Services program at the University of Maine at Augusta invites applications for an Assistant Professor position starting September 2026. The program is looking for candidates able to teach in our generalist human services curriculum. Some of the possible undergraduate courses include: Community Mental Health, Human Services Interviewing and Counseling, Professional Ethics, and internship courses. UMA transforms the lives of students of every age and background across the State of Maine and beyond through access to high-quality distance and on-site education, excellence in student support, civic engagement, and professional and liberal arts programs. UMA is the third-largest public university in Maine. In addition to its main campus in the state's capital, UMA also serves students at its campus in Bangor (UMA Bangor) and through UMA Centers around the state. Requirements

  • Doctorate in Social Work, Counselor Education, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Behavioral Health, Mental Health, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Human Services, or similar areas including substance use disorder treatment. ABDs welcome to apply but faculty must have earned their doctorate to be eligible for tenure.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience teaching in higher education setting
  • Professional license or certificate in your profession
  • An individual who has knowledge about working with children and their families. Some of the courses in the child and family services concentration include Family Interactions, Perspectives on Working with Infants, Toddlers and Children, Interventions for Families with Children, Child Mental Health, and Developmental Disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • This faculty member will prepare course syllabi
  • Develop courses online in Brightspace
  • Create assessments of learning, teaching, and learning support for students throughout their courses
  • Participate in program meetings, UMA committees, community service
  • Collaborate with peers across the University of Maine System
  • Teach classes in person, live online/synchronous, as well as asynchronous
