About The Position

The Department of Literature, Writing, and Film in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in English beginning in August 2026 with expertise in medieval and/or early modern British literature. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will be able to teach first-year composition courses such as Introduction to College Writing and Reading (English 101) and Introduction to College Writing, Reading, and Research (English 102), as well as survey courses in early British literature and upper-division literature courses within the candidate’s primary field of expertise. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. Participation in various service activities within the department and broader university community is also expected.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in English Literature or its equivalent is required.
  • ABD candidates may apply but must complete their degree by August 2026.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise and teaching experience in first-year composition as well as medieval and/or early modern literature, including Shakespeare.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in and a commitment to teaching, with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate and first-generation students.
  • The candidate will also demonstrate clear evidence of scholarly potential as well as a commitment to working with inclusive populations and serving as an active member of the university community.

Responsibilities

  • Full-Time teaching responsibilities include a 4/4 load, which in any given semester is expected to consist of at least two sections of first-year writing and as many as two sections of courses in the candidate’s area of expertise.
  • Research expectations include peer-reviewed publications and other creative activity relevant to the discipline.
  • Faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities.
  • Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations and the discipline as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest.
  • All students, faculty, and staff are required to ensure their materials are digitally accessible and utilize standard technology platforms supported by UW-Whitewater. Examples include, but are not limited to, Navigate, Canvas, and Microsoft Office applications – including Outlook, which is essential for university email communications and scheduling.
