About The Position

To establish and maintain a robust and externally funded program that contributes significantly to the fields of cancer research including cell and molecular biology, genetics, and population sciences. This includes publishing high-impact research papers in reputable journals, securing competitive research grants, and actively collaborating with colleagues both within and outside the department and with the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Additionally, applicants will be expected to mentor and engage undergraduate and graduate students in research activities and foster a dynamic and collaborative research environment within VSU and VCU. This position will emphasize the importance of conducting impactful research, securing funding, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations as well as a robust educational environment for students. If aligns with the typical responsibilities and expectations for an assistant professor in a research-focused position. This role will be a joint faculty appointment between VSU and VCU.

Requirements

  • PhD or Terminal degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. microbiology, genetics, population sciences, cell and molecular biology, etc.) from an accredited university/college.
  • Proficiency in designing, conducting, and overseeing research projects.
  • Ability to develop and test hypotheses, analyze data, and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the discipline, including awareness of current trends and developments in teaching and research within the field.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for disseminating research findings.
  • Ability to contribute to or secure external research funding.
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level and mentoring students or junior researchers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead research teams and manage complex projects effectively.
  • Applicant will be expected to submit at least 1 K-like career development application by the end of their first year along with smaller intramural pilot applications.
  • Applicant expected to publish 1 first author publication by the end of their second year along with 1-2 other collaborative publications.
  • Applicant will be expected to submit at least 1 R01-like application by the end of their fourth year.
  • Primary focus on establishing an independently funded cancer program.
  • Secondary focus on teaching and mentoring students in research.
  • Manage and organize a research laboratory.
  • Evidence of successfully developing peer-reviewed publications.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with advanced laboratory technique, data analysis tools, and emerging technologies relevant to cancer research.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications or presentations in relevant scientific areas.

Responsibilities

  • Years 1 and 2 will be exclusively devoted to building an independent research program.
  • Years 3 will be 70%.
  • Years 4 and 5 will be 45%.
  • Teaching and mentoring students in research.
  • Managing and organizing a research laboratory.
  • Successfully developing peer-reviewed publications.
