About The Position

The School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Statistics and Data Science to begin August 2026. This position is a full-time, nine-month appointment located on Truman's campus in Kirksville, Missouri. In addition to the duties and responsibilities described below, faculty are expected to contribute to the campus culture of the Liberal Arts and Sciences and interdisciplinarity by teaching in the University's core curriculum (The Dialogues) and contributing to interdisciplinary initiatives and coursework as needed. Truman is looking for field-specific expertise accompanied by an ability to teach to students following a broad range of pathways in the liberal arts and sciences. Truman's Data Science and Statistics programs support our excellent undergraduate students as well as a variety of cross-disciplinary areas within our liberal arts and sciences institution, with ample opportunities for summer teaching and research mentoring.

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree (by the start date) in statistics, data science, analytics or a closely related field with substantial relevant graduate coursework and/or teaching experience in statistics and/or data science
  • Coursework, teaching, work, or other experience using R Statistical Software

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated potential for and evidence of excellence in teaching undergraduate courses in statistics and data science and graduate courses in data science and analytical storytelling, particularly those focused on data communication
  • Skill and background with R and other modern data science programming languages such as Python and SQL and analytics tools such as PowerBI and Tableau
  • Ability to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including supervision of capstone projects, masters' theses, and other research projects
  • Experience with and interest in cross- and interdisciplinary curriculum opportunities, including departmental and campus seminar courses and curricular connections to other disciplines and programs
  • Evidence of and potential for scholarly activity consistent with the teacher-scholar model, where faculty research supports and connects to student learning, at a level that would allow appointment to Truman's graduate faculty within the first year of hire
  • Desire and ability to support Truman's liberal arts and sciences mission inside and outside of the department, including an understanding of the role of analytical storytelling as a component of data science, and how statistics and data science students should learn to consider communication, ethics, and their broader impact on society

Responsibilities

  • Teach, develop, and improve classes in data science, statistics, and related areas supporting Truman's liberal arts and sciences mission
  • Advise and mentor students, including supervising undergraduate student projects and Master's theses
  • Perform scholarly activity consistent with Truman's teacher-scholar model
  • Provide service to the department, university, profession, and community
  • Perform other duties as assigned
