About The Position

The Sociology Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in the field of critical criminology, broadly defined to include law, punishment, and justice. This position is set to begin in the fall semester of 2025 and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor. The initial appointment will be for a term of four years. Oberlin College, founded in 1833, is a private four-year liberal arts college located near Cleveland, Ohio, and is also home to a renowned Conservatory of Music. The college enrolls approximately 2900 students and has a long-standing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which is central to its mission. The Sociology Department, one of the oldest in the country, offers a comprehensive curriculum that spans various methodological and theoretical approaches. Currently, the department consists of five full-time faculty members who support a wide range of interdisciplinary programs, including Africana Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, and Law and Society. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a standard load of 4.5 courses per year, which includes introductory sociology courses and a variety of courses at all levels of the curriculum, including capstones and seminars. The ability to teach sociological theory or methods is desirable, as well as the capacity to develop new courses that are not currently represented in the curriculum. In addition to teaching, the incumbent will engage in sustained scholarly research and/or creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on committees. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching, with successful teaching experience at the college level being highly desirable. Oberlin College is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service, and who have experience working with underrepresented and diverse academic populations.
