About The Position

Grounded in the belief that all children can learn, SUNY Oneonta's Department of Elementary Education and Reading seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Social Studies and Civic Engagement with an emphasis on social justice, beginning Fall 2026 to help advance this mission. Expectations include, but are not limited to, teaching, research, student advisement, service, and continuing professional development. This is an on-campus position. SUNY Oneonta is recognized as a regional leader in teacher education and is a member in good standing of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). The Department of Elementary Education and Reading is the largest on campus, with 14 faculty members and a wide range of programs: undergraduate degrees in Childhood Education (1-6) and Early Childhood/Childhood Education (B-6), graduate degrees in Literacy Education (Birth-12), and an advanced certificate in Bilingual Education. Faculty expertise includes literacy education, rural teacher preparation, social justice education, and experiential learning. The department is also engaged in university-school district collaborations and community college 2+2 partnerships that create innovative programming opportunities.

Requirements

  • PhD in Curriculum and Instruction or closely related field (ABD considered; completion required by date of appointment).
  • Teaching certification and a minimum of three years teaching at the elementary or middle school level.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
  • Evidence of the early development of a research agenda.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-ready pedagogies.
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the role of service in an academic career.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, with particular attention to supporting first-generation college students and community college transfer students.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant college teaching experience (social studies and civic engagement, social justice, early childhood (B-2).
  • Experience with social-emotional teaching and learning.
  • Experience or a demonstrated interest in non-traditional grading approaches.
  • Experience teaching face-to-face, online or hybrid (partially online) courses.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in working with diverse populations and/or culturally relevant teaching pedagogies and/or multicultural teaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in Early Childhood and Childhood Education Methods, Social Justice Education, and other areas as needed by the department
  • Teaching in multiple modalities, including in-person and online
  • Maintaining an active scholarly agenda
  • Advising undergraduate students
  • Working collaboratively with departmental and school colleagues
  • Partnering with local school districts
  • Contributing to university-wide goals and initiatives
  • Providing leadership and service to the department, school, university, and community
