About The Position

The Assistant Professor of Reading Education: Elementary Education at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is a faculty position within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. This role involves teaching core reading courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, advising students, supervising field experiences, and contributing to the scholarly agenda of the department. Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in Reading or Literacy from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 18 units of graduate coursework in literacy at the time of hire.
  • Established record of scholarly work in literacy and active participation in professional organizations.
  • Practical teaching experience as a reading instructor at PK-12 or university levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse students using innovative instructional methods.

  • Knowledge and expertise in reading theories, development, and assessment.
  • Experience integrating evidence-based practices in teaching.
  • Familiarity with current trends in reading education, such as the science of reading and censorship of children's literature.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach core reading courses at undergraduate and master's levels in various formats (online, hybrid, face-to-face).
  • Advise students and supervise field experiences.
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of state-required reading assessments.
  • Sustain a robust research agenda in reading, language arts, and children's literacy.
  • Work closely with doctoral students and supervise their research.
  • Counsel teacher education students about career prospects and professional opportunities.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of students.
  • Prepare reports for teacher preparation mandates.
  • Promote the mission and goals of the department, college, and university.
  • Supervise students completing field experiences.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Collaborate ethically with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Stay updated on current developments in reading education.
