About The Position

The Philosophy & Theology Department at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, a Catholic Liberal Arts Institution in the Dominican tradition, invites applicants for a full-time, position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy, to begin August 2026. We seek a collegial teacher-scholar, with specialization in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and his sources, ideally including Latin and Arabic sources, capable of teaching the History of Philosophy and the Systematic areas, and who is competent to teach foundational Theology courses in faith and morals with a mandatum. Candidates must be willing to support the Catholic and Dominican mission of Aquinas College as expressed in its mission statement specifically, and in the spirit of Ex Corde Ecclesiae generally. This is a full-time, nine-month position paid over twelve months, benefits eligible, with the intention of appointment to a tenure-track line, beginning August 2026. Opportunities for summer teaching may be available. The Assistant Professor will work under the direction of the Department Chair and the Provost.

Requirements

  • Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. or be able to demonstrate near completion of a Ph.D. (being ABD), in Philosophy or Theology with a specialization in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching the thought of St. Thomas and his sources, the history of philosophy, systematics, and course in Catholic foundational theology in faith and morals is required.
  • Evidence of effective teaching, scholarly engagement, and the ability to serve diverse curricular needs is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Philosophy and Theology, including Philosophy courses grounded in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and foundational Theology classes in faith and morality.
  • The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester (24 credit hours per academic year).
  • Maintaining office hours, advising and mentoring students, supervising independent studies and senior capstone courses, recruiting students, pursuing scholarly activity, and participating in departmental and college-wide service.
  • The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active program of scholarship or professional development in Philosophy and/or Theology, with particular attention to Thomistic studies and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition.
  • Candidates are encouraged to involve undergraduate students in scholarly research where appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
