About The Position

The Department of Music, housed in the recently renovated and expanded Cowles Music Center, offers both the Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music Education Degrees. The department has nine full-time faculty, two full-time lecturers, and over thirty part-time instructors, with approximately 100 music majors as well as many non-majors in elective courses, lessons, and ensembles. The music programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The music department serves the Spokane community by performing nearly 100 recitals and concerts each year on campus, in schools and churches, and at the historic Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox.

Requirements

  • D.M.A. (or ABD) in Musical Arts or related field.
  • 1 yr related teaching music or choir activities experience.
  • Evidence of promise in effectiveness at college-level teaching.
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and the integration of faith and learning.
  • Strong potential for an ongoing stream of research in the candidate's area of specialization.
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a comprehensive Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Whitworth Choir and one additional choral ensemble depending on interest and department needs
  • coordinate the overall choral program, including the annual Christmas Festival Concert (in collaboration with colleagues)
  • work with other choral and vocal faculty in recruitment and curriculum planning
  • teach in a secondary area depending on expertise and departmental needs
  • establish and maintain positive relationships with regional music educators
  • Occasionally, expanded activities such as being a guest conductor or a clinician for choral rehearsals and performances, a lecturer for masterclasses, and an adjudicator for choral competitions which will be performed at third-party venues, etc., as directed by the University.
  • Possibility of developing new courses that contribute to the university's innovative, interdisciplinary Shared Curriculum.
  • Additional responsibilities include participation in departmental activities and governance, professional and research activities, attending state, regional, and national professional association meetings
  • attending faculty assemblies, development days, and retreats, serving on committees, and advising.
  • Some evening appointments + weekend events may be involved.
  • Little regional travel may be involved not exceeding 60 days/yr or 5 days/trip.
