About The Position

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is seeking a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Elementary Mathematics Education to begin in August 2025. This position focuses on preparing future educators in K-6 mathematics education, emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusion in teaching practices. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mathematics education, experience in K-6 teaching, and a commitment to scholarly activities and community engagement.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in mathematics education or a closely related field by appointment date.
  • Minimum of 3 years of K-6 elementary public school teaching experience.
  • Evidence of scholarship within the field of elementary mathematics education or closely related field.
  • Potential for successful university teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Research, teaching, and/or service experiences centered in culturally sustaining pedagogies or other methods of making mathematics education accessible and relevant to all students.
  • Experience teaching K-6 math methods course at the university level in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Experience with supervision or mentoring of pre-service or in-service teachers.
  • Knowledge of CPAST, edTPA or similar assessments.
  • Experience successfully responding to and navigating educational policy.
  • Eligibility for NC teaching license.

Responsibilities

  • Teach math methods courses for undergraduate, graduate, MAT, and/or lateral entry students in various delivery modes including face-to-face, online, and technology-enhanced.
  • Supervise students during Clinical Field Experiences.
  • Engage in scholarly activities including developing a research agenda, publishing in high-impact refereed journals, and securing competitive grants.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the program, department, and university, including laboratory school settings and/or other field-based sites.
  • Assist in ongoing program revision and assessment.
  • Provide leadership and service to the profession, university, college, department, community, and local public schools.
