About The Position

The Assistant Professor of Dance at Sam Houston State University is a full-time tenure-track position focused on teaching advanced-level technique courses in ballet, modern/contemporary, or jazz to dance majors. The role also involves teaching choreography and potentially other subjects that complement the department's curriculum. The successful candidate will engage in research, mentoring, and service to the department, contributing to the development of students and the program.

Requirements

  • MFA or PhD in Dance.
  • Minimum two years of experience teaching at the college level.
  • Dynamic and inspiring teaching ability.
  • Robust engagement in research aligned with pedagogy.

Responsibilities

  • Teach advanced-level technique courses in ballet, modern/contemporary, or jazz to dance majors.
  • Teach choreography and potentially other subjects such as dance history, non-Western dance forms, critical studies, pedagogy, technology, production, Pilates, or somatic-based practices.
  • Engage in research aligned with the area of pedagogy, including choreography, performance, peer-reviewed publications, or presentations.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate students, including chairing thesis committees.
  • Participate in departmental auditions and juries.
  • Contribute to departmental development and assessment initiatives.
  • Regularly choreograph and collaborate with students for departmental performances.
