About The Position

The Sociology and Anthropology Department at Berry College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in applied or practicing anthropology. We seek a cultural anthropologist who will bring familiarity with region-specific ethnographic work, research projects, and community collaborations that inspire and support students. The successful candidate will have experience in applying anthropology, community engagement, or development. They must demonstrate how their teaching, service, and scholarship will augment students' understanding of wider global contexts as well as real-world opportunities, problems, and research needs in various settings. In addition, this candidate will be prepared to guide students who elect to pursue diverse pathways beyond graduation: graduate studies in cultural anthropology, professions requiring firsthand involvement in research, policy, or practice creation, and practicing professions within business, community development, law, teaching, urban and regional planning, health care, and more. Berry's foundation in an ethos of service to others makes it a welcoming place for applied and community-engaged practitioners and scholars. The department has been integral to Academic Community Engagement (ACE) learning at Berry, and we seek a candidate who will develop this commitment further by expanding students' cross-cultural perspective as well as hands-on experiences. The department also has well-developed ties to related academic programs such as Women's and Gender Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Legal Studies (pre-law), Business, Environmental Studies, and pre-professional health science programs. Various Berry College community-engaged programs foster strong connections to social service providers, civic organizations, and businesses in the local community. The new faculty member will teach a total of 3 sections of introductory cultural anthropology, two electives, and the department's senior capstone course for a 3-3 teaching load (18 hours). We are especially interested in candidates who can offer electives in development, community development, business anthropology, medical anthropology, public policy, global health, or legal anthropology, in addition to specializations of the candidates' expertise.

Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in anthropology or a closely related field, and candidates who are currently ABD should earn their Ph.D. by the date of employment.

  • Working experience as a practicing or applied anthropologist is a plus, as is experience with mentoring student research or community-engaged learning.
  • Applicants with any regional specialization are encouraged to apply, and expertise in Latin American populations is particularly welcome.
