About The Position

The Theatre Department at Binghamton University seeks a full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Acting & Directing, to begin in the Fall 2026 semester. The successful candidate will have significant experience teaching college-level acting, and a professional background in acting and/or directing. Expertise in Black, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI (Asian American/Pacific Islander) or MENA (Middle Eastern North African) theatre is desired. The preferred candidate's pedagogical approach will be informed by professional practice and influenced by traditional and emerging trends in actor training. We seek an artist-teacher whose pedagogy, creative activity, and/or professional experience is rooted in diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion as fundamental cornerstones of a public education and has experience working with diverse student populations. Position responsibilities include teaching all levels of acting classes and directing one mainstage production each year. Other classes may be taught depending upon the candidate's field of specialization. Additional performance specializations (which may include voice, dialects, physical theater, clown, stage combat, intimacy direction, or other specialties) are welcome. In addition to teaching, the position carries an expectation for research and/or creative activity in acting, directing, and/or performance pedagogy, leading to tenure. The position will contribute to the program by undertaking administrative commitments, serving on department and university committees, participating in student mentorship and advising, and modeling excellent collaborative skills. The Binghamton Theatre Department is part of the new School of the Arts (https://www.binghamton.edu/school-of-the-arts/index.html) which brings together the departments of Art and Design, Art History, Cinema, Music and Theatre. The successful candidate will be inclined to work collaboratively with colleagues in support of new and ongoing initiatives within and beyond the department, as appropriate. Binghamton offers both a Bachelor of Arts in theatre with concentrations in acting/directing, design/technical theatre, and dance and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre. Because Binghamton students are notable for their high-achieving academic record, students in both degree programs seek to explore dramaturgical and artistic depth. In addition to performance courses in a wide range of techniques, students audition for main stage and studio productions ranging from the classical to the contemporary, including musicals, plays, and dance productions. This position is part of Binghamton's multiyear cluster hire initiative in Arts Practice, Performance and Research in the 21st Century. This program aims to establish a network of artists and scholars who see their mission as foundational to an intellectually rigorous liberal arts education and who take an expansive approach to their creative activities, research programs, and pedagogy.
