About The Position

The Bower School of Music & the Arts (BSM&A) at Florida Gulf Coast University invites applications for a 9-month, multi-year appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Music Education, who will also serve as Area Head of Music Education and BME degree program coordinator. This position entails coordinating the Bachelor of Music Education degree program and assuming a senior leadership role in music education within the school. Responsibilities include teaching courses in music education, music methods, coordinating student internships, supervising student teachers, monitoring state certification requirements, and serving as a liaison for accreditation procedures with relevant agencies. The successful candidate will also participate in the development of a proposal for a new Master of Music degree and may teach in a secondary area based on expertise and departmental needs. Candidates must hold a terminal degree in music education and present a record of scholarly and/or administrative achievement, with a demonstrated capacity to continue research and creative activity at FGCU. Requirements

• Doctorate in Music Education or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation; completed by start of appointment.
• Three or more years of successful K-12 teaching.
• Demonstrated experience in higher education teaching general music education courses.
• ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2026. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract.

Nice To Haves

• Three or more years of successful college/university teaching.
• Experience with state certification and accreditation requirements.
• Certification and/or proficiency in approaches to general music such as Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, etc.
• Demonstrated resourcefulness in student recruitment.

Responsibilities

• Plans, prepares, and teaches assigned courses, including developing syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments.
• Delivers consistent, interactive, and engaging lectures aligned with curriculum goals and accreditation standards.
• Maintains the highest standards of classroom instruction and engages in reflective self-assessment to ensure continuous improvement.
• Holds regular office hours and provides academic advising and individual support to students.
• Utilizes the University's learning management system and other instructional technologies effectively.
• Collaborates with departmental faculty on curriculum development and program advancement.
• Ensures curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
• Establishes and maintains an active research program, including opportunities for undergraduate student involvement.
• Demonstrates evidence of scholarly publication and grantsmanship.
• Engages in continued professional development and maintains professional skills appropriate to rank and field.
• Actively participates in departmental, college, and university committees and meetings.
• Contributes to community, institutional, and professional service in support of the University’s mission.
• Participates in faculty evaluation, student learning assessment, and required training activities.
• Communicates professionally and in a timely manner with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
• Upholds the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, and excellence in all professional activities.
• Complies with University policies, procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
• Develop and teach a range of undergraduate courses in music education and collaborate on curriculum development at the course and program level.
• Mentor students in music education and finding vocational pathways as part of a socially and culturally engaged academic and regional community.
• Work collegially and actively on program development and assessment with faculty and staff in the Music Program, the Bower School of Music & the Arts, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
• Work collegially and actively with the southwest Florida community and FGCU’s academic and non-academic programs.
• Participate in department, college, and university activities, committees, meetings, auditions, and events.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
