About The Position

The Virginia Tech School of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor whose research and teaching focus on multimedia journalism and on the emergent field of artificial intelligence and its implications on news, information, and democracy. We seek candidates with demonstrated scholarly achievement, or potential for such achievement, aligned with Virginia Tech's Artificial Intelligence Frontier, with a focus on the human impacts of digital technologies. Candidates should be prepared to teach current courses in the multimedia journalism/sports media & analytics division of the School and contribute to curriculum development, emphasizing emerging technologies and their influences on institutions, content, and audiences. The expected teaching load is two courses per semester. It will be at the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The School of Communication serves more than 1,000 undergraduate students across five majors (multimedia journalism, sports media and analytics, public relations, communication, and advertising) and more than 40 graduate students on communication and reputation management tracks of a M.A. degree. The School's multimedia journalism, sports media and analytics, and public relations majors are accredited by the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in communication or related field at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly publication and successful teaching.
  • Potential for the development and maintenance of a nationally or internationally recognized research program.
  • Ability or interest in mentoring graduate students on research, projects, and theses in the School of Communication.

  • Professional experience in industries related to journalism and mass communication
  • Background and research expertise related to artificial intelligence, ethics of emerging technologies, image, video and text generation, blockchain or verification, data mining, content production tools and platforms, human-AI collaboration, machine learning, large language models, or related areas.
  • Background and research expertise related to news, media ethics, social media and digital platforms, information technology, newsroom sociology, audiences, media entrepreneurship, evolving media structures, politics and democracy, misinformation and disinformation, audience studies, or related areas.
  • Potential to secure external funding.
  • Ability to teach students concepts and skills related to multimedia journalism.
  • University-level teaching experience.
