About The Position

The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor in Experimental Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics to begin in Fall 2026. This is a 10-month tenure track appointment.Responsibilities of the candidate will include: Establishing an externally funded research program in experimental atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics, broadly defined Teaching physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, consistent with the academic programs of the department Performing service activities commensurate with rank. Teaching and service responsibilities of the position are commensurate with other Carnegie Research-1 institutions.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in Experimental AMO Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability in the execution and analysis of AMO experiments.
  • Ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, as demonstrated either by formal classroom / lab teaching or professional presentations.

Nice To Haves

  • Postdoctoral research experience.
  • A strong publication record.
  • Experience preparing peer-reviewed external grant proposals or experiment proposals.
