The Program of Liberal Studies (PLS) at the University of Notre Dame is seeking applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in the fields of history of science, philosophy of science, or science & technology studies. This position is set to commence in August 2025 and involves a combination of research, teaching, and service responsibilities. Established in 1950, PLS is dedicated to providing an integrated liberal arts education that emphasizes core texts and high-level scholarship. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 2-2 course load, which includes the Program's Great Books Seminars and two or more disciplinary-based tutorials. Candidates are encouraged to explore the department's website to identify potential tutorials they are prepared to teach, with at least one being in the Science sequence. Additionally, there are opportunities for teaching graduate and advanced undergraduate courses outside the Program, as well as humanities core courses for STEM students. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in history of science, philosophy of science, science & technology studies, or a related field, or have completed all requirements for the degree by August 2025 or shortly thereafter. The area of specialization is open; however, the Program prefers candidates who can complement existing research strengths and are willing to collaborate with Notre Dame's cross-disciplinary research and teaching units, such as the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values, the Initiative on Race and Resilience, or the Gender Studies Program. A strong publication record and evidence of an exceptional teaching history are essential. The University offers a competitive salary and research support.
