Title: Assistant Professor in Assistive and Instructional Technology (Special Education Technology) Position Number: pending Hiring Unit: College of Education, Department of Special Education Location: Manoa Date Posted: 11/04/25 Closing Date: Continuous - application review begins January 2026 Salary Information: Commensurate with qualifications and experience Monthly Type: 9 Month Tenure Track: Tenure Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Temporary/Permanent: Permanent Other Conditions: General funds, contingent upon fund availability. Appointment to begin August 2026. Selectee is required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation in the first year, Title IX training, other required training, and must undergo and pass a criminal background check.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Special Education or closely related field from an accredited institution; will consider ABD if completed prior to hire date.
  • Scholarly research expertise in assistive and instructional technology (special education technology) for students with disabilities.
  • Broad knowledge of special education.
  • At least two (2) years of K-12 teaching experience as a licensed special educator; in the US or international location.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and scholarly expertise in Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Scholarly expertise related to special education technology and inclusive practices.
  • Knowledge, experience, or research working with diverse populations of Hawai'i, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, families, and communities.
  • Experience in teaching, supervising, and/or advising teacher candidates in higher education.
  • Experience teaching diverse university students (e.g., culturally and linguistically diverse, first-generation students, part-time students).
  • Evidence of scholarly activity focused on using artificial intelligence to support teaching and learning in K-12 and/or University settings.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses via on campus and a variety of distance and hybrid delivery modes.
  • Teach content in courses for teachers seeking licensure in mild/moderate and/or extensive support needs.
  • Supervise field/practicum activities in field-based teacher preparation.
  • Advise and mentor students; work with graduate students at the Masters and PhD degree levels.
  • Develop and maintain an active program of research/scholarly activity and publications in area of specialization.
  • Provide service to the university, public schools, and professional community.
  • Participate in program review, program assessment, and accreditation activities.
  • Engage in efforts that uphold and strengthen the University of Hawai'i's mission as a Hawaiian place of learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.
