About the position

The Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a tenure-track position focused on conducting groundbreaking research in AI and ML while also teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS). The role emphasizes a strong foundation in AI/ML algorithms and theory, with opportunities for candidates with applied AI backgrounds. This position is primarily on-site, requiring the incumbent to work at NAU's facilities.

Responsibilities

• Conduct groundbreaking research in Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in SICCS's Computer Science and Informatics programs.

Requirements

• Earned BS in Computer Science or closely related area.
• Earned doctoral (Ph.D. or Sc.D.) degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or closely related area by August 18, 2025.

Nice-to-haves

• Demonstrated expertise in Traditional Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning algorithms.
• Experience with Hardware-implemented AI/ML, Edge AI, AI for Internet-of-Things applications.
• Knowledge of Reinforcement Learning algorithms.
• Established research in core AI theory and development of novel algorithms or techniques.
• Successful track record of contributions to the field of AI as evidenced by publications in relevant conferences and journals.
• Experience in engaging with and leading collaborative multi- and inter-disciplinary teams.
• University-level teaching and mentorship experience, particularly at the graduate level.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience working with culturally diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities.
• Willingness and ability to teach courses in-person and online.
