The Department of Theatre & Dance at The University of Memphis invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 17, 2026. M.F.A. in Dance or M.S. in a movement science discipline required, as well as experience/demonstrated ability in performance and/or choreography and previous experience teaching dance technique classes and/or dance science at the college level. Special consideration given to candidates with experience in both areas. Also required is a demonstrated commitment to student mentoring and development suitable for a professional training program offering the B.F.A. degrees in Dance and Dance Science. The successful candidate should have research interests appropriate to a tenure-track appointment and will also demonstrate willingness to bring to this environment professional, innovative, and collegial contributions in all areas: teaching, creative research, and service. Possible teaching responsibilities include technique classes (which could include ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, or world dance forms) as well as Dance Science specialized courses (such as a two-semester Dance Science I/II sequence and Dance Movement Analysis). Depending on qualifications and interest, the selectee could also choreograph and/or direct productions within the Department of Theatre & Dance, serve as producer of dance concerts, and serve as Head of the Dance area. All tenure-track appointees are expected to maintain a creative research agenda in their area(s) of expertise. Service will include assigned committee work, academic advising of M.F.A. and B.F.A. students, and collaborating with the faculty to support the department's goals.
