About The Position

The Department of Art, Art History & Design within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Reno invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Photography and the Expanded Image, tenure track to begin July 1, 2026. The department seeks an individual with strong research and teaching experience in photography. Ideal candidates would be informed in the theory and practice of contemporary photography, pushing the boundaries of the medium beyond its traditional limits, encompassing lens-based methods and new technologies such as AI to digitally expand how images are produced. Candidates will be actively exhibiting work, presenting at conferences, and participating in national and professional networks. The individual will work closely with existing faculty to teach photography courses and connect with interdisciplinary approaches across undergraduate and graduate teaching throughout the department. The successful candidate must be able to maintain a 2/3 teaching load. 40% of the time spent will be dedicated to teaching, 40% dedicated to research & creative activities and 20% to service. The position will require interfacing with the Area Head to ensure clarity and consistency regarding preparation of course materials, timetabling, and facilitating access to labs and resources for students. Advising is a component of this role, for current, prospective and transfer students. The individual also must participate in service to both the department and the university and continue pursuing creative activity/research.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree (MFA or PhD)
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • 3 years of teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate teaching assistantships
  • Ability to teach Photography courses at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels
  • An active record of research/creative activity in Photography and the Expanded Image
  • In depth knowledge of the Adobe Suite

  • Specialized skillsets used in photography expanded media, using AI tools and software such as Premier Pro, Blender, Touch Designer, and beyond
  • Participation in organizations/conferences dealing in theory and pedagogy surrounding Photography and the Expanded Image
