About The Position

The Ella Cline Shear School of Education at SUNY Geneseo seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in Adolescence English Education (Pending budgetary approval). The School of Education has a long and rich history of preparing teachers who are knowledgeable, skilled in their instructional practices, passionate about their work, and motivated to provide leadership within their profession. Preservice teachers are placed in diverse field experiences throughout the region beginning in the second semester of their teacher education programs. Our candidates' successes are evidenced by an overall 98% pass rate on the New York State Teacher Certification examinations for the past three years. All teacher certification programs of the School of Education are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). The School of Education offers undergraduate programs leading to initial teacher certification in Early Childhood and Childhood Education (Birth-6), Teaching Students with Disabilities (all grades, PreK-12) and Childhood Education (grades 1-6), and Adolescence Education (grades 7-12). Additionally, graduate students can work toward professional certification through our graduate program in Reading and Literacy (Birth-12) program. The priority for our growing programs is teaching excellence: We seek someone with a strong commitment to teaching in a liberal arts setting who is prepared to teach both introductory courses and advanced courses in their area/s of expertise. A commitment to, and experience in, working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds is essential. Requirements

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited U.S. or internationally recognized institution of higher education in one of the following: Adolescence (Secondary) English Education, Teaching & Curriculum, Adolescence Education, Multicultural Education, Urban Education, Critical Pedagogy, or a closely related field. ABD in one of these areas with a designated completion date will be considered.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment as demonstrated in teaching practices, research, and service.
  • Evidence of scholarly engagement related to areas such as adolescence education; English education; multicultural education; culturally sustaining pedagogies; social justice education; critical pedagogies; indigenous education; disability studies; neurodiversity, intersectional, feminist, and/or queer pedagogies, which may include peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations at academic conferences.
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience teaching English at the secondary (7-12) grade level
  • Candidates for this position must be eligible to work in the United States. VISA sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Teacher certification in adolescence English education.
  • Experience teaching in or working with schools with culturally diverse populations, including English/Multilingual Language Learners.
  • Experience with college-level teaching
  • Evidence of supporting teacher candidates in adolescence field placements, and/or building and cultivating mutually beneficial partnerships with school districts or community organizations
  • Experience with curriculum design, assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities (grades 7-12 students and/or undergraduate teacher candidates).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with the NYS English Language Arts P-12 Standards, inquiry-based learning, student-centered pedagogical strategies, family engagement, and educational technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in-person, remote, and online courses in the discipline and proficiency using state-of-the-art technologies for the classroom.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate (and possibly graduate) coursework in Adolescence Education, such as Dimensions of Teaching and Inquiry, Topics in Secondary English Education, and Methods and Materials in Secondary English Education. Other courses may include Social Foundations of American Education, Issues in Education, and introductory courses in the major.
  • Teaching via modalities that may include in-person, online, or hybrid teaching formats.
  • Supervising preservice teacher education candidates in the field while supporting partnerships with our field experience and student teaching placements.
  • Participating in curriculum design, assessment, accreditation activities, and other School and College service, as well as providing leadership in activities related to English/Language Arts.
  • Conducting research and pursuing other scholarly work in area/s of expertise. Research that involves our teacher candidates is highly encouraged.
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for teacher candidates.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment.
