About The Position

The Assistant Sales Manager partners with the Division Sales Manager to strategically manage assigned product categories to drive sales growth, gross profit dollars, and market share versus prior year. This role develops and executes pricing, promotion, assortment, and merchandising strategies based on performance analysis, market trends, and consumer insights to meet or exceed projected business results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Prior experience in store operations, category management, merchandising, or a related functional area.
  • Strong understanding of store operations, merchandising principles, and category management.
  • Financial and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret profit and loss statements and assess category impact.
  • Proven ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make sound, results-driven decisions.
  • Strong planning, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of category business planning, procurement, logistics, and inventory management.
  • Proficiency with standard business software, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and internet-based tools.

Responsibilities

  • Support total store and division-level customer service initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain annual category business plans using historical performance, market data, and consumer trends.
  • Meet or exceed assigned sales, gross profit, and contribution targets.
  • Create and manage detailed pricing strategies by zone and by category, ensuring consistency throughout the year.
  • Develop, execute, and analyze promotional calendars by major category, tracking sales, profit, and share results.
  • Design planograms and recommend product adjacencies aligned with the role and strategy of each category.
  • Determine optimal product assortment; approve new items and discontinue underperforming products based on category contribution.
  • Maintain weekly, quarterly, and annual scorecards to track sales, gross profit dollars, and market share.
  • Measure and evaluate total category and department contribution.
  • Maximize vendor funding and investment to support category and department performance.
  • Develop category-level sales and profit forecasts; consolidate projections at department and division levels on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Conduct detailed post-promotional analysis at both item and category levels.
  • Plan advertisements and in-store displays aligned with category strategies and department initiatives.
  • Act as the primary divisional contact for vendors within assigned categories.
  • Maintain regular vendor engagement for negotiations, performance reviews, and business updates.
  • Partner closely with procurement to align category plans, promotional strategies, service levels, and inventory positions.
  • Coordinate and communicate merchandising plans and promotional direction across stores and divisional teams.
  • Participate in vendor and internal planning meetings as required.
  • Support and implement corporate merchandising and operational initiatives.
  • Visit stores as needed to evaluate execution and merchandising results.
  • Provide direct supervision to assigned office support staff and dotted-line guidance to Buyers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.
