Assistant Produce Manager Position Summary The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing daily produce department operations to ensure high standards of product quality, freshness, food safety, and customer service. This role assists with inventory management, merchandising execution, associate support, and operational compliance while helping maintain an attractive and well‑stocked department. Key Responsibilities Customer Service Maintain a friendly, service‑oriented environment with fast and helpful customer assistance Assist customers with product selection, usage suggestions, and questions Address customer concerns and escalate issues to store leadership when appropriate Department Operations Assist with daily produce department operations including stocking, trimming, wrapping, watering, and display maintenance Build and maintain produce displays, rotating product and removing damaged or outdated items Ensure cleanliness and organization of sales floor, prep areas, coolers, and equipment Support opening and closing department procedures Food Safety & Compliance Ensure proper handling, rotation, code dating, and storage of all produce items Maintain proper temperature control and complete required temperature logs Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, labeling, and Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) standards Follow and enforce workplace safety rules and procedures Inventory & Ordering Assist with controlling inventory levels to ensure adequate quantity, quality, and freshness Support ordering, receiving, stocking, and rotation of produce according to division directives Maintain organized backroom and cooler conditions Assist with physical inventories performed every four weeks Merchandising & Sales Assist with execution of promotional and seasonal produce displays Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and presentation standards Support sales goals through proper merchandising and product availability Associate Support & Leadership Assist with scheduling, training, and assigning duties to produce associates Support coaching of associates on food safety, productivity, and customer service expectations Lead the department during assigned shifts in the absence of the Produce Manager Administrative & Receiving Duties Perform receiving duties including breaking down loads, verifying invoices, inspecting quality, reporting shortages, and stocking product Accurately complete daily logs, production sheets, sales, labor, and other required paperwork Operate department equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, knives, scissors, safety cutters, and electronic ordering devices Qualifications Required Previous grocery or produce department experience Strong customer service and communication skills Knowledge of produce handling, rotation, and food safety practices Ability to lift up to 60 lbs and perform repetitive physical tasks Ability to work in refrigerated environments Preferred Prior lead or supervisory experience Familiarity with inventory control, ordering systems, and shrink management Work Schedule & Environment Flexible availability including nights, weekends, and holidays Work performed in temperature‑controlled environments with frequent exposure to refrigerated conditions
