Under supervision, the Assistant Probation Officer learns to apply the principles and techniques of probation work. This role involves supervising and counseling individuals who are detained, committed, or sheltered in various County juvenile institutions. The officer will also supervise minors assigned to Work Projects and provide close supervision of minors placed on home supervision. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of the growth, development, needs, and problems of minors, as well as knowledge of applicable laws, rules, codes, standards, and regulations governing the care and treatment of juveniles in facilities such as juvenile halls, camps, ranches, or schools. The officer will utilize various counseling techniques, crisis intervention methods, and motivational techniques to assist in the rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents. Additionally, the role involves understanding group dynamics and the symptoms of behavior disorders, which are crucial for effective supervision and counseling. The Assistant Probation Officer must also be familiar with the principles of investigation, including laws governing search, seizure, and preservation of evidence. The position requires the ability to perform basic housekeeping techniques and maintain hygienic standards. The officer will be expected to demonstrate self-defense techniques and appropriate use of force when necessary, ensuring the safety of both the minors and themselves. The working conditions may involve irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, and the officer may occasionally encounter hostile individuals, requiring a strong ability to manage potentially dangerous situations. The probationary period for this classification is twelve months, during which the officer will undergo training and evaluation to ensure they meet the standards required for the role.
