The Assistant Principal leads professional learning, coaches teachers through observation and feedback, and uses data to strengthen curriculum implementation and student outcomes. They collaborate closely with the Principal, Student Services Team, and families to ensure all students—particularly those with diverse learning needs—receive high-quality academic and social-emotional support. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required and a minimum of five years of instructional leadership experience, with a proven record of driving academic achievement.
  • Demonstrates an unwavering belief that all students can achieve at high levels and graduate prepared for college success.
  • Leads in alignment with Brooklyn LAB’s values, modeling integrity, professionalism, and a clear sense of urgency to accelerate student learning.
  • Mobilizes and develops high-performing teams around a shared vision, building collective ownership and accountability for results.
  • Sets and upholds clear, rigorous instructional expectations aligned to students’ academic goals.
  • Uses data strategically to identify priorities, evaluate impact, solve complex problems, and drive informed decision-making.
  • Exercises sound judgment—making and standing by decisions that serve the best interests of students and the school, even in challenging circumstances.
  • Demonstrates resilience, initiative, and relentless determination, maintaining focus and momentum despite obstacles or setbacks.
  • Manages time and resources effectively, plans proactively, delegates thoughtfully, and contributes to a culture of collaboration and shared best practices.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to engage in candid, solutions-oriented conversations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the critical instructional and cultural leader to build and grow a STEAM-focused middle school in a 6-12 college preparatory model.
  • Ensure coherence and vertical alignment of curriculum, instructional practices, and academic routines across grade levels.
  • Lead intellectual preparation, co-planning, and professional learning communities to strengthen rigorous, standards-aligned instruction.
  • Observe classrooms regularly and provide actionable feedback to improve pedagogy, curriculum implementation, and student outcomes.
  • Analyze and utilize student achievement data, assessment results, and program effectiveness to refine instruction and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support teacher growth through instructional coaching, professional development (including Summer Institute), and participation in evaluation processes.
  • Participates in the Instructional Leadership Team and partners with the Student Services Team to align curriculum, interventions, and multi-tiered systems of support for diverse and at-risk learners.
  • Coordinate assessment systems, including Interim Assessments and state testing administration.
  • Design and implement systems that promote positive student behavior, strong classroom culture, and safe, efficient school-wide routines.
  • Build strong relationships with staff, scholars, and families, ensuring consistent communication and community partnership.
  • Support the execution of school-wide strategic goals and priorities, contributing to ongoing school improvement.
