About The Position

The Assistant Principal – Student Life at Barrington High School is responsible for leading, supporting, and developing a climate and culture of inclusivity, respect, and learning where all students feel valued, respected, and have a strong sense of belonging to the BHS learning community. This role also involves exemplifying the professional practices and responsibilities of a Professional Learning Community to foster collaboration and communication, ensuring all students are successful.

Requirements

  • Hold or be eligible for a valid principal's certificate issued by the Rhode Island Department of Education
  • A Master's Degree
  • Five years' successful classroom teaching experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and initiative in the field of education
  • Any exceptions to the above as may be acceptable to the School Committee

Responsibilities

  • Acts under the policies established by the School Committee in all matters pertaining to the assigned building(s), including any tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or Principal
  • Lead professional learning around proactive social and emotional behavioral strategies to ensure all students’ success
  • Monitor student attendance, including identifying, supporting and meeting with families and school staff to support chronically absent students
  • Supervise the creation and implementation of student attendance plans
  • Meet regularly with student groups around social media, positive behavioral responses and regular attendance
  • Meet regularly with student leadership groups (Student Council, Ambassadors, etc.) to discuss student behaviors, attendance, social media use, etc.
  • Collaborate with the SRO, as needed, on issues related to supporting student safety.
  • Be prepared to respond to student behavioral issues as they arise and investigate and follow-up on bullying-related incidents
  • Lead schoolwide initiatives around restorative justice practices to support students and maintain student accountability
  • Promote student agency and collaboration in school climate initiatives
  • Lead the office staff in planning daily teacher coverage needs
  • Supervise and monitor student congestion areas, including daily bus drop-off and pick-up, hallways and bathrooms and the student parking lot
  • Supervising daily after-school detention and assigning coverage for any In-school suspension as needed
  • Provide daily lunch supervision
  • Coordinate, plan and manage AP test ordering and administration and assist with other state testing administration requirements as needed.
  • Share the caseload of student 504 plans between building administrators to monitor, implement and communicate student 504 plans
  • Work collaboratively with building administrators to supervise and evaluate certified staff as needed
  • Works with all building and District staff to develop and maintain a positive school climate conducive to effective learning and optimum teaching and characterized by a common purpose, mission, vision, and high expectations and success for all.
  • Supports the full inclusion of all learners in all aspects of the school committee, championing the belief that all students can achieve at high levels
  • Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for school objectives and programs; interprets School Committee policies and administrative directives; resolves student problems; encourages community participation in the school’s educational program.
  • Assists in the selection of personnel and recommends personnel appointments and assignments to the Principal.
  • Submits reports as required by the Superintendent, Principal and other local, regional or state agencies.
  • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
  • Reflect on practice and assume responsibility for their own professional development by actively seeking and participating in opportunities to learn and grow as professionals and enhance the instructional core.
  • Works with the Principal to ensure that all aspects of the school’s operation complement, integrate with and advance the District’s strategic plan.
  • Follow school policy and procedures, respecting the boundaries of professional responsibilities, when working with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Interact with students, colleagues, parents, and others in a professional manner that is fair and equitable and guided by codes of professional conduct.
  • Exhibit attributes of reliable attendance, promptness, dependability, and professional ethics; Use effective communication skills with students, colleagues, families and related agencies (spoken, written and non-verbal); Complete all requested forms, reports, and data collections in an accurate and timely manner; Perform the functions of the position in accordance with the: RI Professional Teaching Standards; RI Professional Code of Conduct; and all laws, regulations, school district policies, directives, the mission of the district, school-based plans, and administrative priorities / requests; and Perform other duties as may be assigned and/or necessary to perform the functions of the position.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrators.
